<hi style=afpcap>The predecessor to the C-119 was the C-82 Packet which was the result of an Army requirement for a specialised freighter which had a cargo hold with direct access for ease of loading and unloading. The prototype C-82 was ordered in 1943, with over 200 production versions being acquired during subsequent years including examples of the C-82N which were constructed on a second facility at Dallas. However only three of this model were produced before the war ended, with the remaining 789 being cancelled. Illustrated is the fourth production C-82A on an early test flight.</hi>
